ANSI C18.3M is a safety and performance standard developed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for portable lithium primary batteries (including button and coin cells), divided into multiple parts, with the latest versions being Part 1-2024 and Part 2-2021. The following are the core contents and related information of the standard:

1. Scope of application

Battery types: including disposable lithium primary batteries (such as lithium manganese batteries, lithium fluoride carbon batteries, etc.), including button batteries (diameter 5-25mm, height 1-6mm) and coin batteries.

Application areas: Suitable for batteries sold independently or embedded in consumer electronics products such as remote controls, clocks, calculators, etc.

2. Test items

The ANSI C18.3M standard requires multidimensional testing of batteries to ensure their safety and reliability:

Electrical performance testing: voltage, capacity, discharge performance, etc.

Mechanical performance testing: impact, vibration, compression, drop, etc.

Environmental testing: high temperature, low temperature, temperature cycling, humidity, etc.

Safety testing: short circuit, overcharge, forced discharge, leak prevention, etc.

3. Certification compliance

E-commerce compliance requirements: Starting from 2023, major e-commerce platforms require button batteries to pass ANSI C18.3M certification and meet both packaging standards 16 CFR 1700.15/20 (child proof) and Public Law 117-171 (warning label requirements).

Safety objective: To prevent safety accidents caused by children accidentally swallowing batteries and ensure the stability of batteries under normal use and misuse.

4. Related regulations

16 CFR 1700.15/20: Child resistant opening design for packaging, to be completed in conjunction with ANSI C18.3M (Battery Performance).

Public Law 117-171: Require clear warning labels on product packaging, instructions, and battery packs to indicate the risk of accidental ingestion and first aid measures.

5. Standard version

ANSI C18.3M Part 1-2024: Specification for battery size, identification, and electrical performance.

ANSI C18.3M Part 2-2021: Focusing on safety testing methods, including battery behavior in extreme environments.
